Determination of Iron, Zinc and Calcium in whole blood of children with flame atomic absorption spectrometry

[Abstract] Objective To evaluate the methodology of flame atomic absorption spectrometry used to determine Iron, Zinc and Calcium and to understand the Iron, Zinc and Calcium element levels of children in local. Methods The standard curve was drawn, and the precision degree and recovery rate were evaluated; the peripheral blood of children was collected, and the Iron, Zinc and Calcium elements were diluted and detected with 0.5% TrionX-100 containing 1% HNO3, with a ratio of 1∶200. Results With this method, the in-batch variation coefficient was 3.7% for Iron, 1.9% for Zinc and 1.5% for Calcium, the between-batch variation coefficient was 4.5% for Iron, 2.5% for Zinc and 2.7% for Calcium, and the recovery rate was 96.4% for Iron, 98.0% for Zinc and 96.6% for Calcium. The percentage of children with Iron deficiency was 13%, Zinc deficiency was 10% and calcium deficiency was 10%. Conclusion Flame atomic absorption spectrometry shows good reproducibility and satisfactory recovery rate in the determination of trace elements, and it can be directly used for the determination of elements in whole blood, and has satisfactory and reliable results.
