Carl-Photohigh-res2-1-(1).pngCarl Kirton is the Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of Nursing the profession s leading voice of nursing since the 1900s. He earned a BSN from Lehman College in 1986 and a MA in Nursing Education from New York University (NYU) in 1992 and post-master s certificate as an adult nurse practitioner from NYU in 1996. He received a doctorate in nursing practice from Case Western University in 2008 and a Master s in Business Administration from St. Peter s University in 2012. Dr. Kirton is currently pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Nursing at Seton Hall University.

Dr. Kirton has diverse nursing experience including critical care nursing, HIV-AIDS nursing, ambulatory care and nursing leadership. He has held several nursing clinical and operational leadership roles including nurse educator, advanced practice nurse, nurse manager, and director of nursing. Dr. Kirton has more than 15 years of experience as a chief nurse executive in academic medical and safety net facilities. He is an outstanding nurse educator with adjunct faculty appointments at New York University, Rutgers University, Temple University and Philips School of Nursing. 

His scholarship includes significant contribution to the science of HIV-AIDS and other topics in presentations, research, published articles, books, book chapters, online materials, and timely editorials in nursing and healthcare. His contributions include serving as associate editors of Journal of Association of Nurses in AIDS Care and the Journal of LGBTQ Health and Population Health. 

Dr. Kirton integrates his work in nursing leadership, practice, education, and policy in service to the profession as evidenced by ongoing service as President, Board of Advisors, NYU Rory Meyers College of Nursing in addition to serving on multiple editorial boards for peer-reviewed journals, as well as Past President and other Board of Director positions on multiple organizational boards. His contributions have been distinguished with multiple recognitions and awards including the Distinguished Alumni, Estelle Osborne, and Joseph and Violet Pless Faulty Research in HIV Nursing awards from New York University and honored by the New Jersey Association of Nurses in AIDS Care. 

Dr. Kirton has a strong passion for educating and mentoring nurses to be leaders and embracing initiatives to improve equity in healthcare. He is known to mentor leaders in their professional development and achievement of their career goals. In his spare time, he is a voracious reader of fiction and non-fiction works, a patron of the theatre and spends his leisure time in perfecting his interest in garment construction and tailoring.

This includes leading an accomplished team providing all aspects of Clinical Education and Professional Development including education for ambulatory, acute, post-acute, home care/hospice, library service, and acute/ambulatory electronic medical record training for clinical staff, non-clinical staff, and providers across six states.

Professional Practice team includes oversight of Policies Procedures, ANCC certification programs, Magnet Program, RN Residency Program (PTAP certified), Nurse Planner, National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators, professional enhancement programs, clinical professional ladders, awards and engagement programs.

A big believer in successful leadership, Candice supports transformational and servant leadership to help those around her reach their fullest potential. Candice is no stranger to healthcare, having spent 15 years as a Trauma, ICU, and interventional cardiology nurse in academic medical centers such as the Medical College of Virginia and Massachusetts General Hospital. When Candice is not leading Banner Health s incredible education team, you can find her outdoors running, showing her border collie, Stirling, in competitive obedience and spending time with her husband, who is a certified Arborist in the tree care industry and an accomplished guitar player and musician.

Wheatley-1203.jpgDr. Wheatley joined Wake Forest Baptist Health in September of 2014 as System Chief Nurse Executive and was named President of the flagship 885-bed academic medical center in April of 2019. As President, she is responsible for the overall performance of operations at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center inclusive of Brenner Children s Hospital and the Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Dr. Wheatley brings disciplined leadership to bear on complex issues where clinical expertise, strategic thinking and organizational savvy are essential. As a leader, she uses experience and insight to provide structure, order, and clarity to enable teams to make rapid and lasting progress on critical issues.  Her naturally holistic and global perspective was enhanced when she served as the first Corporate Nurse Executive of Abu Dhabi Health Services Company in the United Arab Emirates, a position she held prior to joining Wake Forest Baptist Health. There she was responsible for the professional practice and development of more than 9,000 Nursing and Allied Health professionals from over 72 countries.  Earlier in her career, she held senior leadership positions at Dekalb Regional Health System in Atlanta, Ga., including Senior Vice President, Chief Clinical Operating Officer, Chief Nurse Executive, and Chief Quality Officer.

Dr. Wheatley earned her Bachelor s and Master s degrees in Nursing at Georgia State University and her Doctorate in Nursing Practice at the University of Central Florida. She is a Fellow of the prestigious American Academy of Nursing, is board certified with the American Organization of Nurse Leaders as a Certified Executive in Nursing Practice and completed the Nurse Leader Program at the Wharton School of Business. She is a member of the American Nurses Association, N.C. Nurses Association, the American Academy of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, American Organization of Nurse Leaders, N.C. Organization of Nurse Leaders, and the American College of Healthcare Executives.

Active in professional organizations, Dr. Wheatley currently serves as immediate Past-President of the Board of the Friends of the National Institute of Nursing Research (FNINR) and Board Member-at-Large for the North Carolina Nurses Association. She is a member of the Beryl Institute CNO Council and the HealthLeaders CEO Exchange, and serves on the Advisory Board for Capella University School of Nursing and the Board of Visitors for the University of Minnesota School of Nursing.

Dr. Wheatley s philanthropic interests include the economic independence of women in developing countries and educational preparatory programs with a global focus. She is a current sponsor of Women for  Women International and a past member of the Board of Trustees of the Atlanta International School.

Pat-Patton-(1).jpgPat Patton, DNP, MSN, RN, NEA-BC is currently the Chief Nurse Executive, and Vice President for Patient Care Services at UCSF Health.  He has been with UCSF Health for 2 1/2 years.

Most recently Pat was the Chief Nursing Officer at University of California Irvine Health where he led that organization to their 4th Magnet designation as well as being named one of the Top 50 CNO s to know. Prior to this Pat was at Catholic Health Initiatives for 16 years. During those 16 years Pat held many positions both in the local market as well as at the national level. At CHI Pat was the System VP of Nursing Operations at CHI where he was responsible for Operations, Leadership Development, Magnet and Pathway to Excellence oversight, staffing and scheduling as well as other duties.  Prior to coming to Colorado, Pat was the CNO/COO at a CHI hospital in Kentucky.

Pat is active in the American Organization of Nurse Leaders (AONL), Association for California Nurse Leaders (ACNL), as well as the American Nurses Associate (ANA).  In May of 2020 Pat was named as Becker s 50 Hospital and Healthsystem CNO s to Know.

Pat received his Doctor of Nursing Practice from the University of California, Irvine; his Masters of Nursing Administration from the University of Kentucky and his Bachelors of Science in Nursing at Florida A M University. He also has additional training in faith community nursing. 

Pat has been married for 20 years to Kirk Patton. Pat and Kirk have 4 children between them, three daughters, one son and two grandsons. The children are all adults now and live in Nebraska, Tennessee, and Colorado.

Dr. Mary Ann Fuchs is Vice President of Patient Care and System Chief Nurse Executive for Duke University Health System and the Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs for Duke University School of Nursing.Dr. Fuchs began her career in oncology nursing, later becoming an oncology clinical nurse specialist, and continued on that path working with adult and pediatric stem cell transplant patients. It s always interesting to learn the different paths nurses take in their careers. In this conversation with Mary Beth Kingston, the Chief Nursing Officer at Advocate Aurora Health in Milwaukee, learn about the turns her career has taken over her 41 years as a nurse, as well as her big jump from Philadelphia to Milwaukee just six years ago to accept her current leadership position. Ms. Kingston describes her typical day as a Chief Nursing Officer, although we know that in nursing there really is no such thing as a typical day. Most of her time is spent focusing on patient safety, quality of care, the patient experience, and workforce issues; making sure staff is highly educated and engaged; and working with shared governance teams. She has worked with the Nurses on Boards Coalition (NOBC) both through her involvement in the American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE), a member organization of which she s currently President-Elect, and through sponsorship of the NOBC by Aurora Health.

In this episode, Cathleen Wheatley, DNP, RN, CENP, FAAN, President of Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, and Sr. Vice President of Clinical Operations speaks with Senior Clinical Editor, Lisa Bonsall, MSN, RN, CRNP, CCRN-K.

How being visible and communicating with the front line allows more informed decision-making. Advice for nurses interested in leadership and board membership, including being intentional, identifying mentors, and taking risks.

Wheatley-1203.jpgDr. Wheatley joined Wake Forest Baptist Health in September of 2014 as System Chief Nurse Executive and was named President of the flagship 885-bed academic medical center in April of 2019. As President, she is responsible for the overall performance of operations at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center inclusive of Brenner Children s Hospital and the Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Dr. Wheatley brings disciplined leadership to bear on complex issues where clinical expertise, strategic thinking and organizational savvy are essential. As a leader, she uses experience and insight to provide structure, order, and clarity to enable teams to make rapid and lasting progress on critical issues.  Her naturally holistic and global perspective was enhanced when she served as the first Corporate Nurse Executive of Abu Dhabi Health Services Company in the United Arab Emirates, a position she held prior to joining Wake Forest Baptist Health. There she was responsible for the professional practice and development of more than 9,000 Nursing and Allied Health professionals from over 72 countries.  Earlier in her career, she held senior leadership positions at Dekalb Regional Health System in Atlanta, Ga., including Senior Vice President, Chief Clinical Operating Officer, Chief Nurse Executive, and Chief Quality Officer.

Dr. Wheatley earned her Bachelor s and Master s degrees in Nursing at Georgia State University and her Doctorate in Nursing Practice at the University of Central Florida. She is a Fellow of the prestigious American Academy of Nursing, is board certified with the American Organization of Nurse Leaders as a Certified Executive in Nursing Practice and completed the Nurse Leader Program at the Wharton School of Business. She is a member of the American Nurses Association, N.C. Nurses Association, the American Academy of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, American Organization of Nurse Leaders, N.C. Organization of Nurse Leaders, and the American College of Healthcare Executives.

Active in professional organizations, Dr. Wheatley currently serves as immediate Past-President of the Board of the Friends of the National Institute of Nursing Research (FNINR) and Board Member-at-Large for the North Carolina Nurses Association. She is a member of the Beryl Institute CNO Council and the HealthLeaders CEO Exchange, and serves on the Advisory Board for Capella University School of Nursing and the Board of Visitors for the University of Minnesota School of Nursing.

Dr. Wheatley s philanthropic interests include the economic independence of women in developing countries and educational preparatory programs with a global focus. She is a current sponsor of Women for  Women International and a past member of the Board of Trustees of the Atlanta International School.
